Community Foundation Awards $8,550 in Grants

Outdoor activities like play space and gardens, and arts activities like drama and music are among the beneficiaries of $8,550 in grants awarded by the Staples Motley Area Community Foundation in their spring grant round.
"Three of the awards are designated directly for the Motley community," said Mary Theurer, grant committee chair. "Two others will allow opportunities for students in the Staples Motley School District."
The recipients and their projects are:
Outdoor activities like play space and gardens, and arts activities like drama and music are among the beneficiaries of $8,550 in grants awarded by the Staples Motley Area Community Foundation in their spring grant round.

The recipients and their projects are:
- Staples Motley Schools for $1,600: Outside play space with tricycle path at Little Cardinals Academy-Motley Family Center. Completely fenced and cleared safe space for outdoor exercise and activity.
- Staples Motley Schools for $1,000: 20 new garden plots to create Southside Community Garden to be located near the firs station on the southside of Staples.
- Sprinkle and Sprout Garden Club for $750: To provide additional flower barrels, flowers and soil in the Motley community. LEAP (Leadership, Engagement, Advocacy, Positiveness) is the fiscal agent.
- Lamplight Community Theatre for $1,000: To provide scholarships for students to attend the Summer Lamp Camp. $500 of the grant will come from the grant funds and $500 from the Youth and Family Committee budget. These scholarships will provide a two week drama camp for students who would otherwise be unable to participate.
- Hands of Hope for $800: To bring "The Yellow Dress," a dramatic one-woman play based on stories of young women who were victims of dating violence to students in the Staples Motley School District. There will be follow-up discussion materials for teachers to bring back to the classroom. Educating youth on healthy and unhealthy relationships is an important piece in breaking the cycle of abuse.
- Faith Lutheran Church for $600: To assist in Relay Madness, an event with safe, drug/alcohol free and enjoyable activities for middle and high school youth during Railroad Days.
- Motley's Two Rivers Music Fest for $800: To provide additional music for a weekend of free family entertainment to the Motley Area.
- Lakes Area Pregnancy Support Center (LAPS) for $2,000: To assist in opening the new office in Staples in the spring. The money will be used to purchase equipment for the counseling room, materials for the lobby/welcome area and supplies for the incentive rooms for the families being served.
